Kanamit Cookbook Journal

I ordered this Kanamit cookbook (from Twilight Zone’s “To Serve Man” episode) from Entertainment Earth almost a year ago, and it FINALLY arrived! I can’t wait to start writing all of my recipes and new cooking projects in it.

I received a fully bound version (you can see it here, available as part of their SDCC Exclusive set), but you can get this much more practical wire-bound book for $9.99 at EntertainmentEarth.com.

News

I’m at SDCC!

As you read this, I’m on a plane to sunny San Diego where I’ll spend the next week inside buying sweet geek gear, checking out new companies/brands to tell you about, sitting in awesome panels, and attending parties.

Want to see what I’m up to? Check out a tentative schedule here (I will most likely not be able to make it into any of the TV show panels), and follow me on Twitter.

Will you be at San Diego Comic-Con? Let me know where I can find you in the comments!

Geeky Fashion

Swimmable Mermaid Tails

I used to watch The Little Mermaid every day when it first came out on VHS. I was obsessed, and my mom even made me a fantastic Little Mermaid costume that got many uses. The only thing the costume couldn’t do? Go in water. These swimmable mermaid tails would be the way to go if I ever wanted to remake my old costume. And now I really want to.

Etsy seller Monikanaumann makes each tail to fit custom measurements, and they’re made out of top of the line swim fabric. It’s perfect for your next pool party, and if you want to keep your pool always clean, you can go here to find the best equipment for this.

Swimmable Mermaid Tails, $250 at Etsy.

Geek Fashion: Temporary Tattoos

As much fun as the princess tattoos from the party store are, sometimes you want to step up your tattoo game with fresh, grown-up designs. Enter Dottinghill, a Threadless-like site that allows you to find, create, vote on and purchase original wearable designs.

Tattoos range from $3.95 to $11.95 and always come in sets of 2. It’s a fun way to try out something new for the summer without the commitment of a real tat!

Fun Food

Custom Fortune Cookies

Whenever we get fortune cookies, we read our fortune aloud. Without fail, Mr. Geek always “gets” the same message: “Your children will join the legion of the undead.” Now I can surprise him by actually putting that on a fortune!

KC Fortune Cookie Factory is holding an Eversave deal that will get you two giant custom fortune cookies for $10 or 150 custom standard-size cookies for $20. The deal is good until July 22nd, so order soon!

What would you put inside your fortune cookie?

Geek Etiquette: Don’t Fight Over Music

As San Diego Comic-Con approaches, caravans of geeks are about to make the trek down to sunny California. If you’re like my friends’ road trips, the day will be filled with lateral thinking puzzles, Weird Al, and probably the blasting of the James Bond theme song. But what do you do when you get tired of the old options? Who gets to decide on music?

I suggest you use “Roadtrip Mixtape” by The Echo Nest. Put in your starting and ending destination, and the program will put together a mixtape of local artists from the town you are currently driving through. You’ll learn about the roots of your favorite musicians and get introduced to some local up-and-comers you may not have heard of. Not a fan of the local rapper from Renton, WA? You can skip songs to your heart’s content.

Now the only thing left to fight over is if you should stop at McDonald’s or Taco Bell…

A Geeky Home

Geeky Minimalist Prints

Mr. Geek and I have been looking for more artwork for our home lately, and as soon as I saw these prints, I placed an order. Andrew Heath’s prints are the perfect mix of geeky and artsy, and you can’t go wrong with a Doctor Who/Twilight Zone mashup!

These prints were made for this year’s Comic Con, but you can purchase them from your own home on Fab.com.

Recipes

Recipe: Sundae Cone Cupcakes

For the 4th of July I wanted to give the old “cupcake in a cake cone” recipe a try, but make it as authentically ice-creamy as possible. These hit the mark. Biting into it is a bit weird, because it tastes exactly like a Drumstick cone, but warm and cakey. I’d recommend eating these right after you make them. The hot fudge in the middle will be warm and the buttercream frosting will be cool, making for a perfect sundae.

Sundae Cone Cupcakes

Author:
Ingredients
  • 1 Box of 24 Cake Cones
  • 1 Box of Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 Jar of Hot Fudge (I used Smucker's)
  • Buttercream Frosting (I used this recipe from Savory Sweet Life, it's my new favorite!)
  • Chopped Nuts (Optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place the cake cones in cupcake tins.
  2. Mix cake mix as directed on the back of the box.
  3. Fill cake cones ⅔ full of batter and bake as directed on the back of the box (usually between 18-22 minutes).
  4. While cooking, make the Buttercream frosting and let chill in the fridge.
  5. Remove cupcakes carefully from the oven and let cool.
  6. Once cool, remove part of the middle of the cupcake, and put a small dollop of warmed hot fudge inside. (I highly recommend the Cuisipro Cupcake Corer.)
  7. Frost using an ice cream scoop to get the buttercream to look like ice cream, and top with nuts. Enjoy!
