Fortune Keeper Bracelet

I have a couple fortunes from fortune cookies that I have saved over the years, but they always end up in the weirdest places. Corners of mirrors, taped to my laptop, hidden in a wallet…if I had this bracelet, I could keep those fortunes close to me at all times. My favorite? “Eyes that sparkle with joy need no makeup.”

Fortune Keeper Bracelet, $49 at UncommonGoods.com.

What’s your favorite fortune?

Sexy Comic Dress

Black Milk has created another amazingly geeky dress–this one based on the 1940s comic “Woman in Red.” I’d wear this out on dates and to comic-con parties. Throw on some leggings and a sweater over it and you can wear it on a chilly day. I’m in love!

Woman in Rd Ep. 1 Dress, $104 from BlackMilkClothing.com.

Humble Music Bundle!

My favorite impromptu purchase, Humble Indie Bundle, introduced the “Humble Music Bundle” yesterday. The idea is the same: pay what you’d like for the items listed, and part of the proceeds will go to charities. However, instead of games, you’re now getting great music!

The Humble Music Bundle includes exclusives and rare or award-winning tracks from:

  • They Might Be Giants
  • Jonathan Coulton
  • MC Frontalot
  • Christopher Tin
  • Hitoshi Sakimoto
  • OK Go

This music’s perfect for your summer road trips, barbecues, and relaxed parties. Check out some samples in the video above, and then get your bundle here!

Fairy Tale-Inspired Decor From West Elm

I had the pleasure of attending another West Elm meetup last week, where I was shown their newest collections. Their South African influenced Fall collection is bright and beautiful, but my inspirations were hidden elsewhere in the store.

I have fairy tales on the brain. After attending a Fairy Tale and Superhero Lore panel and checking out a bunch of props from Grimm up close and personal at SDCC, I just can’t shake the feeling that I need more fairy tales in my life. So while I was at West Elm, I spotted a bunch of items that I would include in a fun, woodsy/fairy tale-inspired home.

Twig Flatware
This flatware is gorgeous and looks and feels like twigs. It would be right at home in a cabin hidden in an enchanted forest.
$39 for a 5 piece set.

Paper Mache Birds
This beautiful bird found in the Seattle store can easily be made with one of West Elm’s paper mache birds and your favorite fairy tale.
$12 and under.

Mongolian Lamb Pillow Cover
Add some “Beast chic” to your home with this cozy pillow.
$39.99-$139.00

Tree Stump Side Table
Pay homage to the Woodcutter with one of these side tables. Bonus points if you keep a stack of your favorite vintage fairy tale books on it!
$199 each.

Would you add fairy tale elements to your decor, or do you prefer a different genre to inspire you? Let me know in the comments!

Disney Parks Air Fresheners

If like me, you’re having Disneyland withdrawals, these air fresheners will help hold you off until your next fix. The scents, including “Turkey Leg,” “Mickey’s Premium Bar,” “Mickey Waffle,” and “Candy Apple,” will be available in the parks starting in August for $5.99 each.

What Disneyland scent do you want them to reproduce? I’d love a Dole Whip freshener!

Geek Etiquette: Reuse Your Toys

Mr. Geek and I have been doing some “summer cleaning” lately, and with that comes the discovery of a lot of small toys, figurines, swag from conventions, and other goodies that are fun but mostly just take up space. Instead of tossing them, or even worse, leaving them to gather dust on a shelf, I’d like to find a way to reuse them.

I’m taking inspiration from Alter Ego Jewelry: They create fun and funky jewelry and accessories from action figures, cars, and other small toys that’s gotten quite a celebrity following. Check out their offerings here. I personally love the idea of adding toy cars to belts and clutches! I’m thinking I could do a clutch covered in pins from cons? Maybe a necklace or charm bracelet with an extra D&D figurine or two?

Do you have a collection that’s gathering dust? What is it, and what will you do to give it a new life?

On The Dark Knight Shooting

You are most likely aware of the shooting that occurred in the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises last night in Denver. It was a senseless act that cost at least 14 people their lives in a place where they thought they were safe and surrounded by the geek community. People are wondering what Warner Brothers and DC are planning to do about this, as if this is somehow their fault.

Let’s not look at The Dark Knight Rises for reasoning behind this. Let’s not focus on the shooter. Instead, let’s remember the victims and why they were there. Let’s not stop going to midnight screenings. Let’s not stop living and loving life for fear of an unstable individual. And because life can be short, make the most of it. Hug those close to you this weekend. Tell them how much they mean to you. I know I will.
