Geek Etiquette: Send a Letter!

Do you remember the last time you got a card or letter from a friend out of the blue? I can barely remember the last time I got a piece of physical mail that wasn’t junk. But those rare days that I see a hand-written envelope in my mailbox from a friend, I get so excited. It’s a delightful surprise that makes the recipient’s day!

This week’s Geek Etiquette post is just a simple challenge: Send someone something in the mail. Dig out your favorite stationary set or cards, find a stamp, and let someone know you’re thinking of them. It’ll cost you about 50 cents and a few minutes of your time, and will mean so much to them.

Need new cards? I’d recommend this set from Sad Shop on Fab.com. Looking for someone to write to? Let’s be pen pals.

Gift Ideas

Atari Business Card Holder

PRINTandGRAIN have some amazing designs and letterpress stationary/business cards in their Etsy shop, but the thing that really wows me is this Atari business card holder. You tell them your favorite game, your name, job title, and email address, and they’ll make a ridiculously awesome customized holder for you. This would be the perfect thing for a video game store owner, blogger, or professional geek.

Clutch Made of LEGOs

I am in love with these LEGO clutches by agabag. It adds that perfect bit of geek to a dressier event, and could still be casual enough to bring out for a girls’ night or date. The clutch can be made in a variety of solid or mixed colors, just let the creator know when ordering!

Fun Food

Behind the Scenes at a McDonald’s Photo Shoot

Like many people, I’ve noticed that food in advertisements don’t often look like the food you get at fast food restaurants. McDonald’s Canada has addressed this and took us behind the scenes to show the process of getting the perfect food photo.

As an amateur food photographer, it was really interesting to see the tricks they used to get the shot. Take a look!

Legend of Zelda Nursery

This Legend of Zelda nursery took 150+ hours over a 3 month period to paint. I can’t imagine ever doing that well of a job painting, even if someone put paint-by-numbers up on the wall.

Think you have what it takes to paint something like this? You can see their painting process beginning about 2 minutes into the video. For the rest of us? We can at least get inspired by the creativity.

Geeky Kids

Wolverine Claws. For Children.

Never thought giant claws protuding from a hand would elicit an “aww”? Then you’ve never seen these. At $12.95, you have no reason not to dress your children up in these soft claws and make them fight—I mean play pretend.

Wolverine Soft Claws, one-size-fits-most-children. $12.95 at Neatoshop.

Geek Beauty: Super Inspirations

Fashion and beauty blogs are extremely popular, but it’s hard to find ones that focus exclusively on geek-themed trends. These two are blogs that I keep going back to–their content is cute, geeky, and super fun!

Makeup By Siryn

Makeup by Siryn features intricate and beautiful makeup applications inspired by geeky characters–most often heroes and villains. I don’t have faith that I could recreate the looks as beautifully, but I love getting inspired. She helps me realize that I can go beyond my “barely even there” makeup look!

Looking-Marvelous

Looking-Marvelous takes your favorite Marvel characters and created totally wearable outfits based on them. You can channel your inner geek AND look cute! She takes requests, so if you have a black tie event coming up and you want to look just like Iron Man, she can help you make it happen.

Do you have a favorite geek fashion/beauty blog you follow? List it in the comments!

The collection’s super affordable with prices ranging from $5.99 (laundry bag) to $49.99 (duvet cover). I’ll be interested to see if this will become a continued partnership with more design offerings, or if this is a limited time thing.
