Geek Etiquette: Phone Use at Dinner

The Geeky Hostess is gonna help you get your manners on! Each Monday, we’ll focus on a topic of etiquette. We’ll take a look at the classic rules (using Emily Post as a guide), and then evaluate the rules for our daily lives, creating a guide to “Geek Etiquette.” Have an etiquette question or topic suggestion? Email tara@geekyhostess.com!

Search for “Phone Etiquette” on the Emily Post website, and you’ll find 50 results. Phones have helped us communicate more quickly with some, but completely ignore those we’re currently with. I’ve been at meals where I felt uncomfortable for being the only one NOT on my phone. So what does the source say on phone etiquette while out with others?

If your cell phone rings and you’re in a restaurant…
Excuse yourself from the table and take the call in another room, such as an anteroom, restroom or lobby. Never disturb your own table and other diners by making or taking a call while sitting at the table. (Some ‘cell-phone free’ restaurants now actually require diners to check their phones at the door.)

But what about texting, emailing, checking the internet, or playing the next round of Words with Friends?

The guideline is that you do not text message when you are involved in any type of social interaction – conversation, listening, in class, at a meeting or, especially, at the dinner table. If you really need to communicate with someone who is not at the event – or at the table – excuse yourself and then return as soon as you can.

On our honeymoon, Mr. Geek and I made a conscious decision to leave the phones behind. The first couple meals were difficult. What do we talk about? How do we check IMDB if we don’t remember that movie’s name? By the end of the trip, I dreaded returning to my phone. Our conversations became rich. We looked each other in the eyes. We enjoyed our food. I encourage you all to try to have a meal without phones in the next couple days. It might be tough, but I promise it’s ultimately worth it.

Don’t think you’d be able to resist temptation? Use a phonekerchief (pictured above) to publicly show your guests you’re committed to a phone-less meal. Bonus: the phonekerchief is partially made up of silver fibers that form a Faraday cage around your phone, preventing phone signals from getting through. You won’t even know if you’re receiving calls/texts until you take your phone back out. For a less showy/expensive option, just turn your phone off for the duration of the meal.

Will you be able to take the phone-less challenge? Do you already have rules in place with your family/friends? Let us know what’s worked for you!

TMNT Beanie

We’ve still got a couple months of winter ahead, and nothing will keep me both warmer and “cooler” (eh, eh?) than this TMNT Beanie. In Leonardo, of course.

I seriously used to dream about being one of the teenage mutant ninja turtles. This may be the closest I’ll be able to get without living in the sewers.

Bubble Wrap Calendar

You know that fantastic feeling you get every day in December when you get to eat another chocolate out of your advent calendar? This Bubble Wrap Calendar is like that, but will help you keep your awful “eat less chocolate” resolution.

Pop a bubble every day in 2012. It really doesn’t get better than that. I will be actively looking forward to each new day.

Geek Etiquette: Holiday Thank-Yous

The Geeky Hostess is gonna help you get your manners on! Each Monday, we’ll focus on a topic of etiquette. We’ll take a look at the classic rules (using Emily Post as a guide), and then evaluate the rules for our daily lives, creating a guide to “Geek Etiquette.” Have an etiquette question or topic suggestion? Email tara@geekyhostess.com!

The holidays are over. Gifts have been given, parties have been attended, eggnog has been drunk. Your responsibilities are over, right? Not so much. Don’t forget to send thank-yous! Emily Post suggests the following for Holiday Thank Yous:

Write thank-you notes as soon as possible, preferably within two or three days. Try to acknowledge holiday gifts before New Year’s Day.

Tips:

– The sooner you write it, the easier it is

– Write the note as if you were speaking with the person

– Keep it short and sweet

– Personalize the note with the gift and giver

– Focus on the positive and don’t mention any dissatisfaction with the gift

If you’re reading this then you’ve already passed her deadline. I would personally extend the “Thank-You” deadline out to the first week of January. The holidays are a busy time, and a slightly later thank-you is better than none at all!

I believe holiday thank-you cards don’t need to be as formal as one from your birthday, wedding, etc. You usually exchange gifts with those who gave them to you, and may have already said thanks in person. If you don’t have time for paper thank-you cards to be mailed, a simple email will do. The email will also give you a chance to make some plans to see the gift giver sometime soon, if you’d like!

*One important geek tip: Try to keep the “thank-you”s off of Facebook, Twitter, or any other public platform. It may cause drama between the giver and those who didn’t receive a gift or party invite, and it prevents you from being more personal about the gift/giver. A private message is much more meaningful.

What are your thoughts? Do you send thank-yous for holiday gifts? Let me know in the comments!

What’s Your Resolution for 2012?

New Year’s Resolutions are an important (and often mocked) part of the changing of the years. Most people wish to lose weight, eat better, and finally get their inbox down to zero, and end up forgetting a week later. So how can you find a resolution you’ll actually be able to keep?

Make it Fun: Find something that will not only better yourself, but entertain you as well. In the past I’ve chosen to watch as many films as possible from the AFI Top 100 list, learn how to make all of my favorite dishes from scratch, and spend more time with friends. Resolutions don’t have to suck!

Have a Goal In Sight: Want to exercise more? Train for an upcoming marathon. Want to travel? Set a trip date and start saving! Having a specific goal will encourage you to keep active with your resolution.

Work in a Group: Tell your friends your resolutions so they can continue to encourage you. Ask them about theirs. If you have similar resolutions, work together to complete them! Start weekly cooking classes, a book group, or workout session.

Remind Yourself: Use a program like Followupthen.com to send yourself an email for a month from now, reminding you about your resolutions. Who better than yourself to remind you?

This year, I’ll be continuing to focus on making more meals at home and creating more awesome content for the blog. I can’t wait to see what 2012 has to offer!

What are your resolutions, and how do you plan to make them stick?

Saber Champagne Like a Champ

With New Year’s Eve around the corner, it’s time to start planning your party attire and practicing your best ice breakers and tricks. Blow your guests away by sabering a champagne bottle when the clock strikes midnight! (If you’re at someone else’s home, PLEASE ask their permission first!)

New York Times’ “T Magazine” fills you in on the details to saber like a champ. (For instance, did you know that any dull object will break the bottle neck? I vote you do it with a sonic screwdriver.)

If you end up sabering, get some video and leave a link in the comments!
