Geek Beauty: Scented Nail Polish

The past year or so, nail polish has taken over as my main beauty obsession. It’s cheap, easy to change, and gives you a chance to try a new color or fashion trend without buying a new outfit. My most recent love: scented nail polish. I used to have some back in junior high, but haven’t seen it around since. It makes my hands look and smell good, and helps me realize when I’m resting my face on my hands (which is a not-so-good habit of mine).

Here are some of my fave scented nail polishes:

Betsey Johnson Nail Colour

This polish is the perfect shade of bright pink and is scented with  Betsey Johnson’s “Too Too” perfume. You won’t even need to wear perfume of your own with this on!
$9.50 at Sephora.com.

 Urban Outfitter’s Perfumed Nail Polish

I currently have the mint greenish color on my hands and it smells like bubblegum. I feel like a fashionable little kid holding bubblegum ice cream! The other scents are: cherry pie, vanilla shake, and raspberry lemonade. This collection is the perfect way to try new colors while constantly wanting to eat your hands.
$14 at UrbanOoutfitters.com (although I found my pack on sale for $4.99 at an Urban Outfitters store)

Amazon.com also has a variety of scented nail polishes available–I  haven’t tried the ones listed, but you can’t go wrong with primary colors and candy scents!

Have you tried scented polish? What do you think?

Geek Etiquette: How To Deal with Smelly People

On Friday, I appeared on the Geek Nation podcast to talk a bit about geek etiquette. We revisited an old post topic on gaming too much, and also tackled a new one: what to do if someone you know is smelly. You can check out the podcast here, I come in at around 18:30.

Here are some of the main bullet points on the “smelly” issue:

To Keep Yourself From Being Smelly:

  • Shower daily
  • Wash your clothes regularly
  • Use deodorant
  • Use fragrance if you’d like, but be conscious of how much you use. If you can still smell it on yourself without trying after 5-10 minutes of applying, you’ve put too much on.
  • Traveling/at a convention? Keep a travel-sized deoderant with you. I keep one in my glove compartment–it’s come in handy often!
  • Febreeze works wonders for hard-to-clean costumes or while traveling.

Does Someone You Know Smell?

  • If you’re really close to them, talk to them. Make it a private but direct conversation. You’re there to help them.
  • Not as close to them? Have someone who is talk to them, or present them a small fragrance gift that “made you think of them.” (ThinkGeek has some sweet Avengers Cologne available!)

Have you dealt with the smelliness issue before? How did you handle it?

Don’t forget to check out the full conversation I had with BJ Shea’s Geek Nation!

“Man” Candles

Yankee Candles launched a set of “Man Candles” that includes fragrances like Riding Mower, 2×4, First Down, and the weirdly named “Man Town”. I get the first three scents, but I don’t think I want anything to smell like a “man town.” These scents don’t seem too specific for men–I would enjoy them all myself. My guess is that these were made for women who wanted to secretly get themselves a gift by giving these to the men in their lives for Father’s Day. And for people who don’t feel comfortable buying candles named things like “Hugs and Kisses.”

Would you buy these candles? Do you think they need to create a specific men’s brand?

Man Candles, $17.99-27.99 at YankeeCandle.com.

Troy’s Bagel Bites Casserole

Looking for a meal to make with your friends while watching tonight’s back to back to back episodes of Community? Make Troy’s Bagel Bites casserole, as featured in last week’s episode (Curriculum Unavailable)! For those who missed it, he described his dish as “Bagel Bites in a deconstructed Hot Pocket reduction with a Doritos glaze.”

For ease (and to more accurately match the image of the casserole he was  holding), I took some liberties with the Doritos and made a Doritos bread crumb topping instead of a glaze. I tried my best to stick only with the ingredients he listed, but found that I needed a bit of marinara sauce to make the Hot Pocket reduction work. If you like the processed foods that go into this dish, you will probably love this. It tastes essentially like a large, crunchy Hot Pocket. Mr. Geek’s reaction was “This is…” and then he proceeded to eat his serving, mine, and then go back for more. He still can’t seem to describe it to me. I’d love to know what you think of the recipe if you try it!

Troy’s Bagel Bites Casserole

Ingredients:

  • 18 Bagel Bites (2 boxes of 9 each, I used pepperoni)
  • 9 Hot Pockets (I used pepperoni)
  • 1  1/2 cups of marinara sauce
  • 1/2 bag of Doritos

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray.

Line Bagel Bites on the bottom of the casserole dish, fully covering it.

Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes.

While the Bagel Bites are baking, start heating the Hot Pockets in the microwave. Don’t heat them for the full time or use the crisping sleeve–you just want them to be warm enough to separate the filling. I put three Hot Pockets on a plate at a time and microwaved them for 3 minutes.

Carefully separate the Hot Pockets and place the filling in a saucepan with 1 1/2 cups of marinara sauce. Simmer until cheese is melted. (Hint: Hot Pockets cheese is not… natural. It takes forever to melt.)

Once Bagel Bites are out of the oven, spoon the Hot Pockets sauce mixture over the Bagel Bites, spreading evenly.

Top the casserole with the seasoned tops of the Hot Pockets. Feel free to break some pieces to evenly cover the entire casserole.

Bake for 5 minutes.

While baking, pulse your Doritos in a food processor, blender, or your bare hands if you’re awesome.

Top the casserole with Doritos crumbs  until fully covered, spray with cooking oil.

Bake for an additional 2 minutes until Doritos on top are hot.

Serve. Apologize profusely for making your friends eat this.
