Fun Aprons From Woot.com

Woot.com has introduced “Now You’re Cooking,” a week of kitchen-themed tees, aprons, totes and hoodies. Their aprons ($14) will make you the coolest person in  your kitchen with designs like Top Chief, Bake It So, and The Binge.

I’m personally loving the Types of Cake tote. It’s cute, punny, practical, and only $12.

Take a look at all of their offerings here, but hurry: the sale ends on Sunday!

Princess Leia Hoodie

In other “costumes that can be worn out in public” news, this hoodie rocks my socks. It looks fairly discreet, but once you lift the hood up, you’ve disappeared and Princess Leia has taken your place. Perfect for cold days, movie nights, and impromptu costume parties.

The hoodie is created by Her Universe and is available for $54.50 at Hot Topic.

Geeky Fashion: TMNT Dress

A couple weeks ago, these TMNT and Power Rangers dresses were all over the internet. Because I’m a hard-hitting geek fashion journalist, I instantly purchased the TMNT Leonardo dress so I could try it out and report back to you. Once it came, I did what any of us would–surprised my husband with pizza at work. I have to say, I felt a little bit like I could be hired out for a geeky bachelor party.

The dress itself is very stretchy and comfortable, but the screen print is very thick. This becomes a problem if you’re well-endowed (or want to wear a push-up bra with the dress, as I did). The printing cracked a tiny bit near the top as it stretched, but it’s nothing too noticeable.

If you’re looking for a fun dress for the summer/beach, want to get the most awesome matching dresses for a geeky Bachelorette party, or want something comfortable and fun to wear to cons, these dresses are where it’s at. Because it’s cotton, the dresses can be worn more often than your average polyester Halloween costume, and it can almost pass as real clothing.

The dresses are $33.95 each at Amazon.com.

Where would you wear a dress like this? And how come everyone hates on Leonardo?

Geek Etiquette: Gifts for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is next weekend, and while flowers and brunch are great gifts, why not think outside the box a bit this year? I asked Sharon from Parenting Geekly to give me a list of the things she’d love to get for Mother’s Day. If you have (or are) a geeky mother, this should help make the gift-giving process a bit easier.

Confession time: The thing I want most for mother’s day is for my husband to wake up and prevent the kids from making me breakfast on their own. I love the sentiment, but the culinary skills of my 5-year-old leave a lot to be desired and I’d rather not have to eat her solo attempt at breakfast again this year.

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’m happy to share with you the gifts that I, as a geeky mom with geeky kids, would love to receive.

This “Illustrious Omnibus of Superpowers #2” print from Pop Chart Lab has over 300 superheroes, villains, and beasts all displayed in a cool chart. Developed with the aid of a comic book shop and a Marvel editorial director, you know it’s accurate. This would look so cool in the superhero themed bathroom I hope to one day have.
“Illustrious Omnibus of Superpowers #2” 18”x24” Print, $27  at popchartlab.com.

I love to cook, and I love science. Therefore it’s a given that I would love to combine the two and try my hand at molecular gastronomy. The kits from Molecule-R take what could be an insulting gift and adds a science-y, DIY touch transforming it from “I expect you to cook for me” to “Let’s do edible science together!”
Molecular Gastronomy kits, $59 – $116 at molecule-r.com.

Even perfume, one of the most traditional Mother’s Day Gifts of all, can be found with a geeky twist. Demeter Fragrance Library carries over 225 fragrances, many of them based on a singular scent. They “create scents that are drawn from memories [and] recognize scent as your memory’s best friend… We bottle down-to-earth scents that evoke pleasant memories and experiences of everyday life.” The scents are interesting, ranging from Black Pepper and Celery to Bourbon and “Clean Windows.” There is bound to be a scent that reminds you of mom, or that will remind mom of the kids (Marshmallow or Play-doh, perhaps?).
Fragrance spray from Demeter Libraries, $6-$39 at demeterfragrance.com.

Jinx.com has a nice selection of T-shirts that would be great for any gamer mom, but I especially love the “Keep Calm and Continue Testing” Portal 2 shirt. It’s a riff on the popular World War II era British Propoganda poster, and is a super cute and fairly subtle way for Mom to show her love of gaming.
Portal 2 “Keep Calm…” T-shirt, $22 at Jinx.com.

You really can’t go wrong with anything from ThinkGeek, but I have been eyeing this Light Saber Umbrella since they recently debuted it. It’s available in Anakin, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan versions. The hilts look surprisingly accurate, though they’ve been scaled down for comfort. And since I live in Seattle, where it can rain at the drop of a hat, the built in carrying strap makes this one of the more practical large umbrellas I’ve seen; great for covering a hand-holding Padawan!
Star Wars Lightsaber Umbrellas, $40 at ThinkGeek.com.

Hopefully these things that I would very much like will inspire you to tap into mom’s geeky side when shopping for a Mother’s Day Gift this year.

Make sure you visit Sharon at ParentingGeekly.blogspot.com! Geeky moms–what are you hoping for this year?

Weight Hacking: A Geek Fit Guide

Now that my friends and I are all getting a bit older, our metabolisms are slowing down, and our diets of Dominos and Doritos are needing to be revamped. We’re all starting to exercise and find ways to be more fit, but it can be tough. So many books, exercises, and plans are created with peppy women or hard-bodied men in mind, and that leaves out a lot of my friends. This new book, Weight Hacking, seems like an awesome option. The author is currently fundraising to publish his book, which features weight-loss tips and tricks from himself and other geeks like Neil Gaiman and Bonnie Burton. Donate $25, and you’ll be first in line for an e-book copy. $35 gets you one in print. So how about we all team up together to get a bit more healthy, the geeky way?

I’m also in the works on some Geek Fit posts/videos myself. If there’s anything particular you want to see or have questions about, let me know!

Mountain Dew Cupcakes

Tomorrow I, along with a bunch of other geeky Seattleites, will be sitting in a movie theater for 15 hours. Yes, we are crazy. We’ll be enjoying AMC’s Ultimate Marvel Marathon: a day of Marvel movies leading up to a 3D midnight showing of The Avengers.  If you know me, you know I have a habit of falling asleep in action movies, so I know I need to do something special to stay awake that whole time. Enter Mountain Dew Cupcakes. They’re delicious, they give me energy, and they will help me make friends in the theater. I’ve been given clearance to bring some cupcakes in with me, but if your theater won’t allow them, I recommend this: Bring a baggie of unfrosted mini cupcakes in your purse or coat along with a small container of frosting. But don’t tell them I told you that.

These cupcakes are super easy to make, tasty, and are a great treat for game and movie nights. Like the Marvel wrappers/toppers? You can get them at Williams-Sonoma.

Mountain Dew Cupcakes

  3. Pour mixture into cupcake pans, filling each ⅔ full.
  4. Bake according to the directions on the back of the box, or when a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.

  6. Frost and enjoy!
  7. Mountain Dew Frosting
  8. In an electric mixer, whip butter until fluffy.
  9. Add in 4 cups of powdered sugar, Mountain Dew, and lemon/lime juices slowly as you mix Add more powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
