Geek Fashion: Cosplay Tips from the Opera

I had the pleasure of attending a Seattle Opera costume tour last week, and learned a lot of things that could be applied towards cosplay. Take a look at these tips from the opera to make your next cosplay/costume a success!

  • Display your Inspiration. The opera houses pics of the show they’re working on along with sketches of the costumes and pieces of inspiration. Post pictures of your past costumes, favorite cosplayers, and images of the next person you’ll be portraying on your wall to keep you inspired at all times. Your inspiration doesn’t need to be limited to costumes; I keep an inspiration notebook with images that stand out to me from fashion magazines, and display favorite pieces of artwork, sayings, and clippings on my wall.

  • Keep a Project Notebook. This “swatch book” contains information on every outfit the opera’s making from scratch, from a sketch of the product to swatches and information on every pieces of fabric they use. This helps them pass the costume on to others to work on as well as order more supplies in the future if they need to make adjustments. Keep a binder of your sketches, swatches, and receipts for your costumes so you can make changes later or teach a friend how to make it!
  • Use High-Quality Materials. The opera knows they’ll be reusing costumes, so they make sure to use the highest quality materials so they’ll last longer. The costume will be expensive either way–you can save a few bucks for something essentially disposable, or use/rent it for years to come for a little bit more. The opera also makes sure there is a huge seam/hem allowance in all of their garments so they can be resized easily for future use. If you’re making a costume you plan on wearing to an annual convention, a seam allowance may be a good idea. You never know if you’ll go up or down in weight a bit over the year, or if you’ll want to sell/loan the costume to a friend!
  • Share Your Costumes. As a way of recouping some of the cost of the costumes, many opera houses rent out costumes to other operas/theaters doing the same show. This helps everyone save a bit of money and eliminates waste! Consider doing the same thing with your friends: open up your costume library to friends before cons/Halloween and encourage them to share theirs as well. It’s an easy way to get a new costume with very little time or money. The same can be done for normal clothes: have a clothing swap with your friends as an easy way to change out your wardrobe!

Seeing the costume shop made me want to take up sewing and costuming… there are just so many cool costume possibilities out there! Do you cosplay? What costume are you currently working on?

Want to see more from the Seattle Opera? Join them for their free simulcast of Madame Butterfly at the Key Arena on May 5th. You can get your tickets here. I’ll be in the “Tweet Suite” sharing my experience of seeing an opera for the first time with my twitter followers!

Hello Kitty Bikinis (For Grown-ups!)

Summer makes me think of my childhood spent near the neighborhood pool–not a care in the world other than getting home in time for dinner and bringing money for candy at the pool shop. These bikinis bring me back to that time. They’re cute on their own, but the Hello Kitty touches will make you feel more like a kid. Now to perfect your cannonball…

Hello Kitty bikinis, $30 each at Hautelook.com.

Geek Etiquette: Business Etiquette Tips from Inc.

The Geeky Hostess is gonna help you get your manners on! Have an etiquette question or topic suggestion? Email tara@geekyhostess.com!

This past week, Inc. posted an article on business etiquette from Eliza Browning of Crane & Co., and I really enjoyed it. They understand our world and business structures are changing, but believe that certain rules of etiquette still apply. Whether you’re working retail or starting the next huge social network, these tips will help you. You can see them listed below, but I recommend you read the whole article here. It’s ok, I’ll wait.

The main etiquette rules are:

  • Send a thank you note after every interview or meeting with a client or business partner. I still believe that in this day and age, it doesn’t need to be a hand-written note (though props to you if you send one!), just a quick email will do. Easy rule of thumb: Contact them in the same way they contacted you.
  • Know the names of everyone you work with. This is a tough one for me (I’m bad with names), but it’s as simple as making more of an effort to introduce myself to new people and follow up with people, asking them about their day.
  • Don’t talk about a meeting you just had until you are out of the building. You never know who might be able to hear you!
  • Focus on the people around you, not on your phone. We’ve talked about this before–I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve been in business meetings where everyone’s been on their phone the whole time, and it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. Heck, I’ve been to movie nights and parties where everyone’s been on their phone. That’s even weirder!
  • Don’t judge others. This is another tough one. We naturally want to figure out why people do the things they do, and compare ourselves and our performances against each other. I love that this etiquette rule is posted. It’s a great reminder to focus on yourself and your own strengths.

Overall, their etiquette rules are grounded around one question: “Will this make them feel good?” Try to put out that effort and positive energy, and you’ll see yourself rewarded. It reminds me of a quote I’ve been seeing a lot lately: “You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.”—Malcolm S. Forbes.

So this week, try to be nicer to those around you–even if they can’t immediately help you get ahead and blend in the company events prepared by the best corporate event planners. You never know where you’ll both be in a year or even a couple months!

And if you haven’t yet, please check out the full article at Inc. It’s great!

Fun Food

Edible Dollhouse Furniture

Make breakfast and dessert a bit more interesting with this edible furniture mold. You can create scenes, “decorate” furniture with food coloring, syrups, and icing, or top cupcakes with furniture for a housewarming party!

The molds are created by Sapore dei Mobili, and although I don’t think they’re currently for sale, if you’re in the Milan area you can check them out in person. While you’re there, tell them to create a miniature people collection. I want to play D&D with cake–it would make killing minions so delicious!

Mass Effect Mixer

The owner of the Derlaine Art Tumblr has the best boyfriend in the world–he modded their Nerf gun and Kitchen Aid Mixer to fit in the Mass Effect world. While the gun is obviously painted (most likely with a stencil), the mixer looks like it may be decorated with decals. Want to decorate yours? Use electrical tape for nice clean lines that won’t permanently damage your mixer.

Have you modded a household item? Tell us about it in the comments, or better yet, email a pic to tara@geekyhostess.com and it may end up in a post itself!

Fun Food

Dippin Dots Maker

I love Dippin Dots. It’s ice cream that makes you feel like an astronaut while eating it.  How can you get any cooler?

This Dippin Dots maker will allow you to make your own at home, instead of tracking down a lone kiosk in an abandoned mall. I am confused as to why this is only being marketed to children, because I want it right now. It uses mixes or fruit juice to make an at-home treat, and it’s only $26.31. Consider me sold.

Dippin Dots Maker, $26.31 at Amazon.com.

Entertaining, Libations

Superhero Ice Cubes

On beautiful days in Seattle (like today), the whole city stops to stare out the window, take walks, fill patio seating parties thanks to an event seating rental, and look for a nice cold beverage.

If you’re entertaining on a day like that, these ice trays will make your beverages a bit more super. The Marvel tray makes ice shaped like The Thing, Captain America, The Hulk, and Iron Man. Want to add a few heroes to your party? You can also pick up Spider-Man and Batman trays.

The Marvel tray is $11.00 and available at Amazon.com

Sleep Like a Princess

Your child will be whisked off to the ball in dreamland in this ridiculously lavish coach bed. At $47,000(!), it seems like a pretty ridiculous purchase, but could be made by hand for only a few hundred if you’re the crafty sort. I tried to see if they have anything like that on a payment plan – but I’m assuming these kinds of ridiculous purchases are reserved for people who can blow 47 grand on a bed. Or you can just purchase a castle bunk bed for a measly $4,295.

The beds are available from PoshTots.com, but I’d really recommend you just build something yourself.
