Geek Fashion: Utility Belts

Batman may not be the first person that comes to mind when looking for a fashion icon, but he’s done a few things right. Having the amount of money he has helps, of course, but the thing I like best about him is his belt.

Utility belts are the bad-ass version of a fanny pack. It can substitute as a purse and keep your hands free for other things. I purchased this Black Nylon Swat Belt from an Army surplus store a couple years back, and wear it for a lot of the cons in the area. It’s great because I can hang my keys and camera from it, store my credit card/ID/cash in the pockets, and there are even pockets that were clearly made just for my lip gloss. I pair it with a t-shirt or tank top, skinny jeans and boots, and I look like I’m always meant to wear one.

Wearing the utility belt at the Night Zero booth at ZomBcon.

Do you have a utility belt? Would you consider getting one? Where would you wear yours? And most importantly, if you were a superhero, what would your name be?

Onesies for your Lil’ Geek

Mike Vasquez of Terrible Designs has started production on a line of geeky onesies, and is calling upon the help of backers on Kickstarter to release the line. His Kickstarter campaign is already at 3 times his goal, but there’s still time if you want to donate a bit and pre-order the line for the geeky baby in your life. I personally love the Chewbacca and TMNT onesies, and hope he’s still creating and selling them when I have kids!

Pre-order onesies of your own starting at a $15 donation, here.

Geek Etiquette: Do You Game Too Much?

The Geeky Hostess is gonna help you get your manners on! Each Monday, we’ll focus on a topic of etiquette. We’ll take a look at the classic rules (using Emily Post as a guide), and then evaluate the rules for our daily lives, creating a guide to “Geek Etiquette.” Have an etiquette question or topic suggestion? Email tara@geekyhostess.com!

The release of Mass Effect 3 this past week has prompted tons of “you won’t see me for a week” comments on social networks. It’s always fun to hole up and play a game straight through if you can, but does it effect your relationships with your partner, friends, or family? What about other online obsessions? Do you spend hours on reddit or pinterest every night?

I asked all of you on Twitter to let me know how you play video games–do you look for moderation or play it in one sitting? Do you go to the extents of profligating on high-end stuff like GamingRig dell u2718q monitors and fancy mice? Most folks responded that they want to play for as long as possible. If this is just an occasional thing (when new games come out or you’re having a LAN party) those living with you should be able to support you. You’ve been looking forward to this moment, and as long as you let people know what’s about to happen, you should be ok. Majin72 says: “I give them fair warning that I’m going into straight gamer mode. Any complaints will be dutifully ignored.” When Mr. Geek got Skyrim, I was prepared for him to get sucked in, and I let him spend a Saturday playing the game. I made him a nice meal that was easy for him to eat while gaming, and checked up on him to see if he needed any snacks/beverages throughout the day. By letting him spend the day gaming, he was able to see that I was supportive, he was able to get a lot of gaming out of his system, and I was able to have a quiet day to myself to run errands.

Of course, if your partner or friend acts like this every day and begins avoiding obligations or activities IRL to play games, you may need to chat with them and encourage them to set up a schedule for their gaming. Or you can check out the blog My Partner is a Gamer and learn a bit about the games they’re playing (and commiserate with other gamer widows/widowers).

But what if everyone in the house wants to play the hot new game, and you only have one console, desktop, or sweet monitor? Scheduling time is a must. It can be as casual as staggering things you need to do that day so one of you can be on the system/computer while the other one’s gone, or as official as a calendar set out with hours marked off for each person. OhAmy alternates nights when she has to share a game. The beauty of playing the same game with others is you can talk about the story, the strategy, and how things are going with someone who’s going through the same thing. I’d even encourage the non-gamers in the house to check out the game that’s got your partner so enthralled, maybe you’ll surprise yourself and enjoy it!

Are you guilty of spending too much time gaming or online? How do you keep your relationships strong? Let us know in the comments!

Contest: Knits for Nerds

I received an amazing book in the mail recently titled “Knits for Nerds“. The book has 30 knitting projects all based on things from our favorite shows, books, and activities. The only problem? I don’t knit. Correction: I knit lumpy scarves with the best of them (and I LOVE my lumpy scarves). But when faced with amazing projects like a baby elf hat, a Star Trek: TNG-inspired sweater or dress, or a laptop bag that doubles as a chess board, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do them justice. So I want to pass on the amazingness to you!

The book’s projects range from easy to advanced (easy includes a scarf inspired by Jayne’s hat from Firefly, and advanced includes a stuffed robot inspired by the Cybermen from Doctor Who) and most of the projects are cute on their own–your non-nerdy friends may never know that the shrug you’re wearing is actually inspired by Galadriel from LOTR. For those who are newer to knitting, there’s a great “abbreviations and techniques” section in the back that includes full color pictures on how to do certain knits. Even I would be able to figure it out!

I’m guessing you want to know how to get this book in your little knitting hands. You have three ways to enter! (Leave a comment for each entry for it to count more than once.)

  1. Leave a comment with the nerdiest/geekiest knitting project you’ve ever done.
  2. Follow The Geeky Hostess on Twitter.
  3. “Like” The Geeky Hostess on Facebook.

This contest is open to residents of the US only, since I’ll be shipping the book out myself. A winner will be chosen on Thursday, March 15th at noon. Good luck!

Don’t want to take your chances and would rather just buy the book? It’s available for $11.55 at Amazon.com

Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of the book to review by Andrews McMeel Publishing. The review is my own opinion.

EDIT: I randomly (using Random.org) selected our winner: #15, Jen! Congrats Jen! You’ll be getting an email from me shortly.

This is almost enough to make me want a pet. Or spoil my friends’ pets.

Fun Food

Nostalgic Food on Amazon

We all have a favorite food from our childhood that just isn’t around anymore. Sometimes it’s for the best–that cereal or instant mac and cheese just may not taste good to our palates anymore, and we should remember it fondly through the eyes of nostalgia. But every once in a while, you find out something you loved is still around, just hard to find.

Here are a few nostalgic items that are alive and well–they’re either sold in other countries or are just hidden in small drugstores. Lucky for us, we can get them all at Amazon.com!

Post Alpha-Bits Cereal

I loved Alpha-Bits growing up, and was convinced they were discontinued. I’m thrilled to have found them online–I just need to find a few more friends to go in on the purchase with me, since it’s only available in packs of four boxes.

Rice Krispies Treats Rice Cereal

Speaking of sugary cereals available in packs of four…

Dunkaroos Cinnamon Graham with Vanilla Frosting & Sprinkles

Mr. Geek tracked these down as a Christmas gift for me a couple years ago, and they’re just as good (if not better) than you remember. Also available in honey graham and chocolate.

Quaker Instant Oatmeal Dinosaur Eggs

…Because who wouldn’t want weird gummy dinosaurs in their oatmeal?

Crispy M&M’s

Apparently Crispy M&Ms still exist in Germany. Man, those things were addictive.

Space Food Sticks

I haven’t tried these before, but apparently they’re pretty nostalgic for some folks. This case comes with half peanut butter, half chocolate flavors.

Linda’s Lollies

Did you used to have those fundraisers in your elementary schools with the giant lollipops that came in every flavor imaginable? Here you go. You know your 10-year-old self would want you to have these. (I’ve also seen these lollipops at random seaside gift shops and drugstores.)

What food do you miss from your childhood?

Planning Your Seattle Wedding

Tara & Alexander – The Wedding from David Zimmermann.

As I approach my one-year anniversary, I’m able to look back at the wedding planning process. Spoilers: It’s tough. I’ve planned events of all sizes, but planning your wedding can be really difficult–you’re more emotionally and financially connected, and family and friends are as well. Luckily, the Seattle wedding industry is pretty amazing to work with. Here are some of my tips and tricks for planning a great Seattle wedding:

Attend Wedding Shows

This may be the part of me that loves free things talking, but I really enjoyed wedding shows. It gave me a chance to see a wide variety of different vendors, get inspiration, and take advantage of deals. And yes, you often get free things as well (the cake sampling and champagne alone is worth the price of admission). Here are some yearly shows that I recommend:

  • Seattle Wedding Show Held in January, this is the biggest wedding show of the year. You will find tons of vendors you didn’t even know existed.
  • Urban Unveiled Held in October, this show brings the best Seattle vendors together to create an amazing night. I couldn’t afford most of the vendors there myself, but loved gathering inspiration.
  • Many wedding venues hold shows in their space, to give you a feel of what your wedding could look like. Ask them if they have something coming up that you could attend.

Look Out of the Wedding Industry

There are so many beautiful wedding venues in Seattle, but there are plenty of locations that aren’t specific to weddings as well. We got married at the Space Needle–it’s not as pricey as you’d think! Don’t be afraid to ask a non-traditional venue to work with you.

On that same note, don’t be afraid to look outside of the wedding industry for other aspects of your wedding. My bridesmaid dresses were from Nordstrom. Have a favorite bakery? Get them to make your cake! Prefer flowers from Pike Place? Grab them the day of the wedding!

Add Touches of Seattle

If you have plenty of out-of-town guests coming in, make sure they see some of the best of Seattle. Slip some produce from Pike Place or a gift card to your favorite coffee shop into their hotel goody bag. Many of our guests attended a walking tour of Pike Place Market the morning of our wedding.

Don’t forget yourself! We thought it would be fun to take the monorail to the wedding instead of a limo. We were right. 🙂

Be Prepared for Rain!

Planning on an outside wedding? Make sure you have tents or an indoor location available as a back-up. We chose an indoor location, but wanted to make sure we had umbrellas available just in case. (You can rent great vintage umbrellas from Bella Umbrella or Sustalux.) I was actually a bit bummed that we didn’t need to use them!

Job Hunters Trailer

I’ve been hard at work on the web series “Job Hunters” for the past few months, and am thrilled to present the release of our trailer! The series premieres online on April 4th, but you can see the first episode before the rest of the internet at Emerald City Comicon on April 1st. We’ll be hosting a panel at 2pm in room 2AB.

So what have I been doing on this series? I’m a co-producer, co-writer and actor, and have also been handling the business-side of the series, the marketing, and the craft services. Can you believe I’ve been providing them with food for months and haven’t yet brought in any cupcakes? This may need to be remedied soon.

You can find out more about Job Hunters at www.watchjobhunters.com.
