May 2015 Cookbook Club Wrap-Up

IMG_1059

“An Unexpected Cookbook” was an expected hit. I made three recipes, and in the process learned a lot about the different types of ways you can make bread. I didn’t have a lot of experience with this, so it was a fantastic learning opportunity!

I had some difficulties when my braided bread dough didn’t rise at first, but the internet came to my rescue. Apparently if your bread doesn’t rise, you can microwave a cup of water and then put the bowl of dough in the microwave with the hot water and close the door. Leave it be, and it will rise! Science.

Chris-Rachael’s recipes are so well-written and entertaining, that I couldn’t even let myself get frustrated with mess-up moments like the dough. The recipes make you feel like you have a friend in the kitchen teaching you how to cook and sharing funny banter along the way.

Although the items I made aren’t the most photogenic in the world, they were all simply delicious. I also learned that beef stew simmering makes the whole house warm and inviting and lovely smelling amazing. I’m definitely going to be remaking that one in the fall and winter!IMG_1133

Want to know more about the recipes I tried this month? Check Instagram for the hashtag #GHCookbookClub. You can also visit KitchenOverlord.com for the Mushroom, Beef, and Onion Hand Pies recipe, or just pick up a copy of An Unexpected Cookbook yourself! If you like Lord of the Rings, delicious breads, and excuses to have multiple breakfasts, you need it in your life.

Stay tuned for this month’s #GHCookbookClub book!

Work Out Like a Superhero

Tara Theoharis - Workout-6

(Topaz Peak Mesh Paired Up Swim Tank and Santa Rosa Flex Splice Tights)

I used to think I didn’t like exercise. It felt like punishment, and I didn’t believe anyone who truly enjoyed it. But now I get it. There is something out there for everyone. I personally love taking Barre 3–it’s a mix of pilates and yoga that leaves me feeling renewed, reconnected, standing taller, and that good-kind-of-sore you get from a full body workout.

I had to learn that working out wasn’t just about working off calories or looking better. It’s about making time for yourself, making yourself stronger and more capable, and finding a way to relax and focus on something other than work. And as much as I love going to barre classes (and the occasional Zumba or dance class when I want to just have fun with friends), sometimes you need a bit more motivation. That’s where your superhero outfit comes in.

Tara Theoharis - Workout-12

(Coral Bay 2 in 1 Tankini and All Elements Running Tights)

Every hero has an outfit they wear when they’re called to duty. This outfit makes them feel invincible. It helps them move. It protects them. And darn it, sometimes it just makes them look bad-ass. I think  your workout attire should do the same thing for you. You’re your own hero, so look like it! Don’t be afraid to break out the bright colors and the high tech fabrics. If it scares you off, think of your superhero persona. You’re Clark Kent by day; what are you when you hit the gym?

Tara Theoharis - Workout-9

TYR acted as my Edna Mode recently and hooked me up with some great new ensembles. I love the bright colors, fun details, and the fact that the fabric does triple duty. All of these pieces have built in UPF 50+ capabilities to protect me from the sun, and the tops and printed leggings can be worn in and out of the water. Plus, the outfits are comfortable. In fact, after this shoot, I stayed in the tankini and running tights for the rest of the day!

Tara Theoharis - Workout-14

It took me too long to realize the benefits of a good workout and even longer to understand how a great workout ensemble can help. Learn from me. Don’t wait until you’ve worked out and toned up to get a fun outfit. Get yourself something now. It’ll  help you be the hero you know you can be.

Tara Theoharis - Workout-2

What’s your fave workout? And do you have any fave pieces you wear when you’re exercising?

Check out more fun items at TYR.com, and a special thank you to Mallory Shoemaker for snapping the pics!

Barefoot Bubbly Prosecco and a “Little Mermaid” Themed Drink

Barefoot Bubbly

I had the pleasure of sampling some of Barefoot Bubbly’s Prosecco the other day, and while I’m not one to turn down sparkling wine of any type, I was particularly excited about this one. Barefoot Bubbly is close to my heart: Mr. Geek and I had the pleasure of visiting a tasting room of theirs back when we were engaged, and it’s now the sparkling wine we go for when we’re celebrating anniversaries or special occasions. We’ve gotten the Brut in the past, but I think after this, we’ll be grabbing the Prosecco first.

The Prosecco is the perfect thing to sip on a sunny day. It’s crisp, has the perfect tickle of bubbles, and has a not-too-sweet citrus taste. (I sensed a taste of green apple in there, myself.) It would be perfect just by itself, or would complement a fruit-filled brunch or a spicy lunch or dinner.

As I sipped it, I pictured myself on a sunny, warm, beach. Waves crashing nearby, sun beating down on me. And maybe it’s because I was currently helping plan a Disney-themed bachelorette party, or because I was already a glass of Prosecco in, but I started thinking about The Little Mermaid, and how this would probably be her drink of choice. (Let’s pretend for a second that she wasn’t 16. Ahem.) I can just see her sipping a glass of this with Eric, reminiscing about the first day she had legs. Barefoot, on the beach. The bubbles in the drink reminding her of the foamy sea.

In this mindset, I decided to dress the Prosecco up a bit to be more “Little Mermaid” appropriate. (See picture above!) Your Prosecco ends up looking like the ocean with a sandy beach on top. It’s super easy and adds a dash of pizzazz to your drink!

“Under the Sea” Bubbly

1. Moisten the rim of a champagne glass with a bit of champagne.

2. Rim the glass with gold glitter crystals.

3. Splash a dash of Blue Curacao into the glass.

4. Fill with Barefoot Bubbly’s Prosecco.

5. Top with a cocktail umbrella.

6. Enjoy while imagining you’re on a beach!

Darling, it’s better down where it’s wetter, when the “wetter” is the bottom of the champagne glass!

So next time you want to feel like a teenage mer-princess, start sipping that Barefoot Bubbly!

Are you a Barefoot Bubbly fan? What’s your fave type?

(Thanks again to Barefoot Wine for sharing some bottles for me to sample!)

It’s May. The weather’s getting nice, the days are longer, and adventure is calling. I thought picking a Hobbit-themed cookbook was only right.

An Unexpected Cookbook, by the lovely and talented Chris-Rachael Oseland, is full of delicious and fun recipes that will fuel you up for your next adventure or Hobbit/Lord of the Rings marathon. There are even some great items you can make ahead and bring with you on a picnic or a hike!

The book is divided up into the following categories:

  • Breakfast
  • Second Breakfast
  • Elevenses
  • Luncheon
  • Afternoon Tea
  • Supper
  • Dinner

In addition to adventure fuel, a lot of these recipes will be perfect for those Mother’s Day brunches or Bridal Showers invading your spring calendar. And there’s something for everyone. The book includes 11 Paleo-friendly recipes, 19 gluten free recipes, 20 vegan (and kosher and halal) recipes, and 40 vegetarian recipes.

I’m thrilled to have the excuse to try new bread recipes, make a hearty supper, and invite my friends over for fun brunches. Remember to keep an eye on my Instagram through May to see pics and reviews of the recipes I try. You can join in on the fun by getting the book and sharing pics of your creations with #GHCookbookClub! I hope you choose to go on this adventure with me!

(Also, Chris-Rachael is currently running a Kickstarter for another one of her geeky cookbooks: Dining with the Doctor: Regenerated. If you’re a Whovian or a lover of geeky recipes, you’ve gotta check it out!)

April 2015 CookBook Club Wrap-Up

lemon bars

Whew! This month really flew by. I don’t know what happened, but here we are, about to enter May, and I didn’t get nearly everything I wanted done. But I DID make a lot of delicious treats from Lesley Stowe’s Desserts from My Kitchen!cookies

This book is gorgeous–you all know that. But it’s so pretty it could almost seem intimidating. Luckily, the instructions are fabulous and I was making brand new dishes that all turned out delicious! You can see the pictures and reviews of all the recipes by searching for #GHCookBookClub on Instagram.

The recipe I loved the best (and will be making ALL spring and summer long) was Lesley’s vanilla semifreddo (on page 219). According to Lesley: “A semifreddo (which translated means ‘half cold’) is a partially frozen Italian dessert that has the texture of frozen mousse and is slightly richer than ice cream.”

This cookbook has 5 different semifreddo recipes and variation suggestions in addition to those. I thought I’d start simple and I may work my way to the other ones next time I whip up a batch. This recipe is quicker and easier (in my opinion) than regular ice cream and tastes SO much better. But it does require that you have an electric mixer and a LOT of bowls. Lesley Stowe was kind enough to let me share this recipe below!

Vanilla Semifreddo

semifreddo

Ingredients:

  • 4 large free-range eggs, separated
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup heavy or whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Line a 9- by 5-inch loaf pan with plastic wrap or parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat yolks and 1/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Set aside.
  3. In another mixing bowl, beat cream until it holds soft peaks. Add vanilla and mix until combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  4. In a third mixing bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add remaining 1/4 cup sugar and continue mixing until firm (but not dry) peaks form.
  5. Fold whipped cream into yolk mixture, then fold in half of the egg whites and mix until well combined. Gently fold in remaining egg whites. Pour into prepared loaf pan and freeze for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight. Slice with a hot knife to serve.

Once you’ve got the hang of that, you can check out her book for the other flavors! Or just fold some Nutella in it and eat it straight out of the loaf pan like I may have done. I’m classy like that.

One embarrassing and fun fact about semifreddo: I always accidentally say “semi-frodo” when I read it. I may have also accidentally written that a few times. But I like to think it’s a desert a hobbit would enjoy. Speaking of hobbits, stay tuned for May’s cookbook club book: I think it’ll be an unexpected culinary adventure for many of you! 😉

One last piece of business before I say goodbye to April’s GH Cookbook Club pick: Lesley Stowe’s giving away a copy of the book and some Raincoast Crisps to one lucky Geeky Hostess reader! Enter below for your chance to win:

Avengers Table

ASSEMBLE! MARVEL’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out on May 1st, which means you only have a week to plan an epic viewing party. Get your friends together, watch the first Avengers (and the other Marvel movies–I’d recommend Thor and the Iron Mans myself!) and get prepped for the newest addition to the Marvel collection.

I planned such a party this past week. There were food, drink, escape games, prizes, and of course, movies. Thanks to Collective Bias, I was able to hit up my local Walmart and grab everything I needed for the party. (You can see everything they have and more at walmart.com/avengers.) I might have had a bit too much fun finding all of the cool Avengers stuff…

Cookbook Club April 2015: Desserts From My Kitchen

Desserts From My Kitchen

Welcome to the Geeky Hostess Cookbook Club! Each month I’ll pick a cookbook and try various recipes from it. I’ll post pictures of the outcomes on Instagram and share my thoughts on social media. Based on permissions from the author/publisher, some months may include giveaways, free recipes, and interviews. You can join along by getting a copy of the book and sharing your thoughts with #GHRecipeBookClub!

I’ve been wanting to start a cookbook club for a while. I have stacks and stacks of cookbooks with fun recipes and beautiful pictures, yet I hardly ever actually use them. This gives me a chance to really explore the books and learn a bit more about cooking/baking in the process. Plus, it gives you a chance to see multiple recipes from a book made by someone other than the author, and allows us all to learn and share tips together if you choose to get the book as well!

To start us off, I’ve chosen Desserts from My Kitchen by Lesley Stowe (the creator of Raincoast Crisps, those delicious crackers I used in my Fairytale Party post!). I had the pleasure of meeting Lesley Stowe at the Seattle Food Bloggers Conference, and she’s amazing. She’s a Paris-trained chef, former caterer, and now creator of the Raincoast Crisp line. She has a variety of cookbooks, but this one is her newest. Her passion is desserts, and you can really see it through the gorgeous creations in this book. Many of the desserts look like they’d be at home in an art museum!

The recipes range from fairly simple to complex, and all of them have measurements written out by cup/teaspoon and by weight. Although this cookbook isn’t particularly geeky, I feel it lays down a great foundation on a variety of treats. Once you have these down and in your repertoire, you can find ways to incorporate geeky touches!

The book includes the following categories:

  • Cookies
  • Bars & Biscotti
  • Tarts & More Tarts
  • Cakes
  • Dinner Party Desserts
  • Frozen Desserts
  • Holiday Favorites
  • Toppings & Special Touches
  • Baking Basics

I’m looking forward to trying the following recipes:

  • Oatmeal Milk-Chocolate Chunk Cookies (A nice basic!)
  • Chocolate Macarons (I’ve been wanting to learn how to make macarons for a long time!)
  • Lemon Shortbread Bars (These are going to make a fantastic treat for Easter brunch!)
  • Semifreddo (A frozen mousse/ice cream type dessert. She has a few different flavor options!)

And if I have time, I may try one of her beautiful tarts or cakes.

Desserts From My Kitchen is currently available for $26.27 on Amazon.com. Will you join me for the first Geeky Hostess Cookbook Club? If so, please share your thoughts and pics by using #GHCookBookClub!

Plants vs. Zombies’ Magic Taco

Magic Taco

Have you heard the news about the new Plants vs. Zombies comic? Dark Horse is releasing “Bully For You,” an all-ages miniseries coming to a comic shop near you in June! The news made me want to make something special–and what’s better than a magic taco?

I’ve been on a bit of a healthy/homemade kick lately, and wanted to make something delicious and worthy of being “magic,” but is healthy enough to serve to your family and friends and feel good about it. The Magic Taco does not have any meat in it, so I made mine with a delicious black bean and veggie filling. I also used some of Mission Foods‘ Digestive Health Tortillas to add some healthy probiotics to the meal. (They also now have Gluten-Free tortillas and Carb Balance tortillas available in stores–a great way to make sure everyone’s happy and healthy on taco night!) What you get is a taco you can feel good about eating. Magic indeed!
