Happy New Year!

2012 was an amazing year for Geeky Hostess: I spoke on panels, got to know more of the geek community, appeared on podcasts, and wrote special columns for other sites. I look forward to MUCH more of all of that in 2013–I may have some other surprises up my sleeve as well!

Thank you all for reading, commenting, and just being all around awesome. Let’s rock 2013!

Here’s a look back at my top 5 most popular posts of 2012:

5. Troy’s Bagel Bites Casserole

4. Pirate Rum Cupcakes

3. Harry Potter Snuggie

2. Stoli Salted Karamel Vodka

1. Mountain Dew Cupcakes

What would you like to see more of in 2013? Recipes? Etiquette? Fashion? DIY? Something else?

Help With Resolutions

GoMightyLogoColor

Over the next day, I’m betting a majority of you will be making resolutions for the New Year. The usuals will probably be out there: Eat better, exercise more, manage time better. In addition to those, I hope you’re also leaving room for fun resolutions. These can include things like: See a new movie a week, learn Klingon, visit another country, or finally learn how to knit a Jayne hat.

No matter what your resolution, I have some great tech tools and apps that will help you achieve your goals!

Go Mighty

I’ve mentioned Go Mighty before, but they’re worth mentioning again. This site allows you to write out your goals for the world to see. Get inspiration from others, keep track of your progress, and possibly even have one of  your goals funded by one of their sponsors!

Producteev

I live for To-Do lists, and Producteev is my favorite To-Do list app. Create a label for each of your goals, and set to-dos and deadlines for yourself. You can add other people to your “team,” so Mr. Geek and I can assign tasks to each other. Producteev’s available online and for iOS/Android.

FitBit

Mr. Geek and I got these for each other for Christmas. FitBit is a tiny device (I can clip it to my bra) that records your steps, flights of stairs walked, calories burned, and overall sleep patterns. If you prefer a bit of gamification to your “get fit” goals, this is the way to do it. It’s the only non-free thing on this list, and comes in at around $99.

Pinterest

Pinterest is more than just pretty pictures. Create an inspiration board for each of your goals. Is your resolution to cook more? Create a board to store the recipes you want to try. Want to learn how to sew? Keep track of the projects you want to make. Follow companies and people that relate to your resolution and allow their pins to inspire you!

Social Media

Want to be held accountable for your resolutions? Tell your friends! Ask them to check up on you and make sure you’re succeeding. Record your progress on sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram so your friends can see how you’re doing!

What are your resolutions for 2013, and what apps will you be using to succeed?

While everyone else starts thinking about their resolutions and goals for the new year, you can start celebrating the other achievements: putting together your first set of Ikea furniture, shotgunning a PBR, or eating an entire pack of bacon.

Demerit Wear features Girl/Boy Scout style badges for things you couldn’t quite achieve in the scouts. They’re a great conversation starter  on a backpack or totebag, or a great gift for the underachiever in your life!

TARDIS Makeup

It’s Christmas Day, which means it’s also time for the Doctor Who Christmas Special! I’ll be cozying up with my brand new TARDIS pillow to watch the show, but if you have grander plans, you may want to try this TARDIS makeup:

Merry Christmas, everyone! May all your wishes come true!

Hats for Your Cat

Princess Peach CatGoing home for the holidays means I get some quality time terrorizing the family cat. My mom bought her a couple holiday-themed hats and accessories, but her nerdy collection of hats is sorely lacking. Next time I come down, I’ll be bringing some of the items from SarabiRose‘s Etsy shop. How can you resist little Mario and Princess Peach hats?

Cat Accessories, $6-12.50 at Etsy.

Game of Thrones Beer

Game of Thrones Beer

As a complete shock and surprise to EVERYONE, the world did not in fact end today. So now that we’re all still around, let me give you something to look forward to! In addition to new episodes of Game of Thrones in March, you’ll be able to sit down to watch them with a cold, themed beer.

HBO has teamed up with Ommegang, a brewery in upstate New York, to create Iron Throne Blonde Ale, which will be released around the same time as the new season.

According to sources, “Iron Throne is a blonde ale at 6.5% ABV and brewed with a robust amount of pils, honey, aroma malts and red wheat. Gentle hopping includes Styrian Golding and Hallertau, appropriately noble hops.”

…I’m already planning the party.

(While you wait for more info on the beer, make sure you grab your Game of Thrones steins so you’ll be all ready when it’s released!)

Doctor Who Cookbook

You thought you were a Doctor Who fan? Check out Chris-Rachael Oseland. Her unauthorized Doctor Who cookbook, “Dining With The Doctor,” has a different recipe based on each episode of the first six seasons of the reboot (starting in 2005). The recipes vary from a cocktail served in an episode, to a cutesy snack in the form of a Dalek, all the way to full entrees. Your entire day’s meals could be Doctor Who-themed! It even has an entire 16-page chapter on various Fish Fingers and Custards. Another bonus: The cookbook includes US and UK-based measurements, so all Whovians can use it without trouble.

DW Dalek Ironside Toast Sandwich

This cookbook can help you put together the perfect Doctor Who feast before the next episode comes out, and with 2-day shipping or the Kindle version, you can still get it in time for the Christmas special!

I foresee a Doctor Who brunch in my future. It’ll include Slitheen eggs, the Family of Blood(y Mary), and a Cinnamon Pull-Apart Crack in the Wall. Delicious!

Dining with the Doctor: The Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook, $19.99 for Paperback, $7.99 for Kindle edition at Amazon.com.

A pdf copy of Dining with the Doctor was provided to me to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
