24 Hours of Cooking: Sandvich

At this point in Extra Life, we were gaming for four hours and feeling pretty good. I know we needed a meal that would sustain us, but not make us too full or tired. The “sandvich” from Team Fortress 2 seemed like a perfect option. Meat, cheese, veggies, a tiny bit of carbs–it hit pretty much every food group! The best part? It’s super easy to make. Seriously. I don’t even need to write out a recipe. You just have to take a look at the diagram and follow it:

I recommend turkey and swiss for the lunch meat and cheeses. Follow it up with some tomato slices, lettuce, white bread, and an olive, and you’re set! (Or you can get fancy and add some condiments like we did. I added pesto to mine!)

I don’t know how or why, but this sandwich tasted better than any I’ve made in a long time. Way to go, Valve.

24 Hours of Cooking: Yoshi Egg Scramble

This past weekend, I spent 24 hours cooking video game-themed food while my friends and I played video games for Extra Life. The first dish I made, at 9am that morning, was a Yoshi Egg Scramble with applewood bacon and apples on the side. It was healthy, delicious, and gave us all the energy to keep going!

Yoshi Egg Scramble

Ingredients (to feed 5):

  • 4 pieces of applewood bacon
  • 1 TBS olive oil
  • 6 mushrooms
  • 10 eggs
  • 1/2 TBS milk or water (optional)
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • Additional bacon and/or apples for the side

Directions:

Begin by cooking the bacon. I prefer to use the microwave (it leaves the stovetop available for the other items). To make bacon in the microwave, place some paper towels on a plate and lay the bacon strips over the paper towels. Cover with a paper towel and microwave for 4 minutes. Remove the bacon and let cool with a new paper towel on top to soak up a bit more grease.

While the bacon is cooling, start heating a pan on the stove with a bit of olive oil in it.

Chop the cleaned mushrooms up into small pieces, place in pan.

Chop the cooled bacon into small pieces, set aside.

Crack the eggs into a bowl and add 1/2 TBS of milk or water to the eggs. Whisk until the eggs are blended.

Add the shredded mozzarella to the bowl of whisked eggs, mix. Put the mixture into the pan.

Add the bacon pieces to the mixture in the pan. Add salt and pepper to taste.

As the egg mixture solidifies, move it around the pan and “scramble” it up. The eggs are done when they are no longer runny.

Serve with apple slices or additional pieces of bacon. Enjoy!

Contest: Julep Maven

Before we go further with this post, there are two things you should know:

1. I love nail polish. It’s the best accessory to an outfit, it’s easy to change, it lasts a while if you want it to, and it’s not too expensive. I feel way more awesome when I’m wearing nail polish.

2. I am AWFUL at painting my nails. I’ve gotten a lot better since I’ve started wearing it more (practice makes perfect!), but let’s just say I’ll never be a manicurist. You will see some pictures below that may shock and concern you. Let me tell you this. If you’re not great at painting your nails, do it anyway. You’ll get better eventually, and until then, the polish you get on your skin can easily wash off next time you take a shower.

WIth that being said, I’d love to introduce you all to Julep. Julep is my absolutely favorite nail parlor, and they’ve launched their own line of toxin-free nail colors (and everything else you need for an awesome manicure/pedicure). Their polish is now available in Sephora, and you can get the newest colors before everyone else by joining their Julep Maven program. They send you monthly boxes based on a personality quiz you take, as well as other fun goodies. I’m obsessed with the quick dry polish drops that came in the October “Bombshell” package!

The candy corn came wrapped up in the box. But I thought it was more fun spread around. 🙂

The October box featured polishes that would be perfect for your vampire or zombie costume: a dark, blood red, and a black crackle polish. I haven’t tried crackle before–it’s really cool! This color combo especially makes a sexy, fun “I just crawled my way out of a coffin” look. And that’s a sentence I never thought I’d type. Anyway, whether you need colors for cosplay or just want to stay on top of the trendiest shades, Julep is for you.

You can try the Julep Maven box yourself for just ONE PENNY! (Unless you’re in Washington State–you have to pay tax on the box, so you’ll end up paying around $1.90. But still!) Just make sure you go to this link, take the quiz, then put “GEEKYHOSTESS” in the promo code.Is one penny too much for you? Want to grab a box for a friend? Can’t decide between the style profiles? Then enter to win an intro box for free! I will pick one winner (must be from the US or Canada, sorry!) on Tuesday, October 30th. Just enter through the Rafflecopter, below!a Rafflecopter giveaway

Disclaimer: I was provided the October “Bombshell” box for free by Julep Maven in exchange for the review. I will also receive boxes based on the amount of people who sign up with my affiliate link. All thoughts and opinions in this post are my own, and I only work with sponsors and companies that are a good fit for my blog. I truly love Julep and their Maven program and thought you would too!

Geek Etiquette: Game It Forward

I spent the weekend playing games (and cooking video game-themed food) to raise money for the Seattle Children’s Hospital through Extra Life. My team and I had a great time and ended up raising $2,722! One of the highlights was when Brandon Bozze, founder of Game It Forward, joined us for some charity-based gaming. We played Free Rice while talking about his new company and their first game, Tringo (a cross between trivia games and bingo). Tringo is a casual, competitive game where you score points based on your trivia knowledge, and those points end up turning into money donated to the charity of your choice. They’re already partnered with Seattle Children’s Hospital, and hope to partner with more charities in a range of areas soon.

You can check out Game it Forward on their IndieGoGo page, and if you feel so inclined, you can donate to their campaign. They need our help to help others!

Between Game It Forward, Free Rice, and Extra Life, I’m pretty excited about the charity-gaming partnerships out there. Are there other games or companies out there I’m forgetting? Leave them in the comments! And then go game–it’ll make the world a better place.

Stay tuned this week for recipes and info on the meals I cooked during Extra Life, and a big thanks to everyone who tuned in during the 24 hours!

Introducing: OneUpMakeup

A couple weeks ago, I gathered together with my friends Liz, Kristina, Meagan, Mallory, and Molly and put together a geeky makeup channel. I swear, filming with this group of girls was like being at an awesome sleepover: I was giggling like crazy the whole time while we played with makeup. I can’t wait to show you some of the videos we’ve done, and am so excited these ladies wanted me to be a part of this new project.

Check out the intro and subscribe to be the first to see our newest videos! And leave a comment letting me know what geeky makeup look you want us to do!

Weddings

TARDIS Arch

Kristina and Tom showed that their love lasts over space and time by incorporating Doctor Who elements to their wedding–most importantly, this ridiculously cool TARDIS arch. It’s the perfect amount of geek while still feeling like a more traditional wedding.

Take a look at all the pics from their wedding (including the beautiful TARDIS blue bridesmaid dresses and shoes, and the bowties and sonic screwdrivers for the guys) at WhenGeeksWed.com.

Geeky Lollipops

Vintage Confections makes some of the coolest lollipops I’ve seen. Space, dice, skulls, superheros, emoticons and insects are just some of the decorative options they have available. Most lollipops are available in the flavor of your choice (I’m loving options like champagne, cinnamon roll, and banana cream) and many are customizable. I think these would make the best hostess gift, party favor, or Halloween candy. Just beware–the shop has gotten a lot of attention and has some delayed times for certain lollipops because of it.

Geeky Lollipops, ranging in price from $1-2 each, are available on Etsy.com.

Gift Ideas

Battleship Shots

You may remember seeing a photo that was going around the internet: it was of pizza boxes that were converted into a “battle shots” board game, allowing players to drink their battleships as they were being sunk. ShipShots have taken that idea and made it a bit more classy (if that’s possible for a drinking game). Their boards are custom-made in the colors of your choice, and will ensure you have a few good evenings with your friends. The pricepoint ranges from $45-55, making it a great gift idea.

The only question remaining: what will you fill your ship shots with?
