OOTD: Buffy-Inspired

PhotoGrid_1374504331810

This was my last outfit of SDCC–a bit more “cute” and girly than my other outfits, but I played it up a bit with the harder/darker accessories. It’s inspired by the girly and bad-ass natures of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Thanks to Markie for snapping the pics!)

OOTD: Comic-Inspired Fashion

It’s come to this. It’s the middle of Comic-Con. I’m tired. I’ve given up on getting my hair to cooperate in the humidity. I’ve wondered why I even thought bringing heels would be a good idea. But, I’ve got panels to attend, the cast of Being Human to interview, and the box office for Thrilling Adventure Hour to work. I thought today would be a great time to pull out a classic look. I wore a “Seattle in the Winter” version of this at Emerald City Comicon, and now it’s San Diego’s turn. (Big thanks to my roommate Rachael who got suckered into taking photos of me again!)

OOTD: TARDIS Thursday

PhotoGrid_1374177955545

It’s the first full day of SDCC, so I broke out the big guns: The TARDIS dress. It keeps me cool in the expo hall and the shorts I wear underneath mean I don’t need to worry about the dress riding up! Thanks to my roommate Rachael for taking the pics before a panel began!

TARDIS Dress: Black Milk
Bow earrings (I hear bow ties are cool now): Hello Kitty (they’re made of the same stuff as mood rings!)
TARDIS Necklace: Clockwork Couture Kickstarter incentive

The name of the game today is dressing for comfort. I’m flying and getting in just in time to grab my badge and freshen up for preview night. This outfit will take me from home to the air to the hotel room to the convention center easily!

Giveaway: Ariel Apron by Jordan Dené

 Ariel Apron

I was sitting down to watch The Little Mermaid the other day when Jordan reached out to me. “Would you like to review a Little Mermaid apron?” It was like she was psychic.

The apron is fun and extra-pretty to wear because of the style of the bottom. It feels more like a skirt than your average apron. The construction of the apron in general is really nice: it feels sturdy but girly, and I was impressed with the level of detail in the design and stitching. I look forward to wearing the apron while making some Shark Week cupcakes–it’s only right.

The Ariel Apron is one of four different designs in the “Princess Aprons” category of Jordan Dené’s shop, and that is only one of the many fandoms she works in. Between the astronaut, TARDIS, Arrested Development, and Harry Potter aprons, I would have a ridiculous time trying to pick my favorite. Check out everything available in the shop here.

You can win your own Ariel Apron by entering the Rafflecopter giveaway below! Too impatient, or want a different apron? Use code “geekyhostess20” to get 20% off your order! Get shopping now at jordandene.com.

Friday Favorites

Friday Favorites: July 12

Friday Faves July 12

The good part of Friday Favorites: I get to look over all the fun things I discovered over the past week. The bad part? I keep seeing the dates tick past each Friday and wonder where all the time is going. Can the world slow down for a second, please? Anyway, here are my favorites for this week!

Favorite Book: All the Nomz

All the Nomz is a cookbook full of recipes by celebrity geeks. You can download it for a small donation to Child’s Play (they suggest $5). Delicious food, awesome geeks, and supporting Child’s Play? Amazing! Find it at AlltheNomz.com.

Favorite Kickstarter: Steak Wrapping Paper

It’s wrapping paper. It looks like steak, cutting boards, and butcher paper. It’s hilarious. It’s wonderful. I’m going to get the Grade A set. You should donate. (Mr. Geek and I got their last meat-paper offering, which looked like a cheeseburger. It was also wonderful.)

Other Favorite Kickstarter: Nerdy Candles for Nerds

These candles are colored, scented (and some are shaped!) like your fave geeky/pop culture characters and objects. I’m in love with the TMNT collection that all are scented like various herbs used to make pizza. Amazing, right? I’m going to pledge for one candle, then probably buy more once they’re officially out. (But don’t tell Mr. Geek. He seems to think I have enough candles, like that’s a think that can happen.) Donate here.

Favorite Makeup: Geeky Hostess Collection

I’ve been playing around with the Geeky Hostess collection and experimenting with different things you can do with them. Holy cow, it’s versatile. I’m excited to keep exploring! You can pick up a set of your own at the Geeky Hostess store.

Smell Like a Geek with Marie DeMars

bluebox

I was recently asked to try out some of Marie DeMars’ scents and I was thrilled to see that she had some inspired by Doctor Who. I received a sampler and they arrived in this amazing TARDIS box, as seen above. (I’d rather get a present in this blue box than in that other blue box, am I right, ladies?) Mr. Geek and I both have a thing for cool boxes, and right away he picked it up. “Where did this come from? What is this?” He was sold. Basically, even after the perfume is gone, I’m keeping the box for tiny treasures. It’s awesome.

Anyway, let’s get to the perfume! I received Silence in the LibraryElevenRiver Song, and Corsair. They’re all oil-based and go on incredibly smooth. They’re warm and musky scents, but wear subtly, which is nice. Silence in the Library makes me think of sitting on a big, comfy chair with multiple old books surrounding me. Eleven makes me feel like The Doctor gave me a big hug and his scent stayed with me, River Song is simply delicious and a little spicy (just like the woman herself), and Corsair is smooth, yet surprising. Although they are all lovely, River Song was my favorite scent to wear. I kept smelling my wrists after putting it on!

You can purchase the scents individually or in a trio. Not sure which ones to get? Get a sampler like mine! And lucky you, Geeky Hostess readers get 30% off with code “GEEKYHOSTESS”. Visit Marie DeMars’ Etsy shop to try these perfumes and more!

DIY Push-Up Pops

Remember Push-Up Pops? Now remember the “Pebble” Push-Up Pops with nerds inside? I grew up on these things. It wasn’t summer if these weren’t in the freezer. I started getting a hankering for them over the last couple weeks, and realized how ridiculously easy it would be to make them myself. Presenting: DIY Push-Up Pops!

DIY Push-Up Pops

Author:
Ingredients
  • Push Pop Containers (Around $1 a piece from Amazon. They're reusable and can be used for all sorts of cool projects!)
  • Sherbet in the flavors of your choice (I used orange and lime)
  • Rainbow Nerds (often found in the "movie candy" section of the stores)
Instructions
  1. Allow the sherbet to thaw slightly so it can be mixed.
  2. Mix (by hand or on a slow setting in a mixer) the Rainbow Nerds and sherbet in a large bowl.
  3. Spoon the mixture into the push pop container, and place the lid on.
  4. Return the push-up pops to the freezer and let chill for at least an hour.
  5. Enjoy!

See? So easy. So delicious. But be careful, they melt quickly! Better eat them all now.

What was your favorite summer treat when growing up?
