Between ECCC, Norwescon, PAX East, and the launch of Job Hunters, this week has been a busy one. Lucky for me, I stumbled across this Dalek relaxation tape.
I feel so much better! Don’t you?

If you’re looking to expand your geek wardrobe, look no further than your local con. In the past I’ve purchased t-shirts and aprons, but this year I focused on fun accessories. Lucky for you, you can pick up everything I got online! Take a look:
I’ve been eyeing this scarf online for a while, and was thrilled to see it at the con! I bought it instantly. The scarf is long (almost 8 feet), and made from a t-shirt-style jersey knit, meaning it’s light, comfortable, and drapes well. The scarf’s available at Binary Winter’s Etsy shop as well as some sweet t-shirts and ties. You’ll love everything there!
I couldn’t NOT get cupcake socks. PunchBrand.com has tons of adorable clothes and accessories, check them out!
I had the pleasure of getting a demo of Espionage Cosmetics by the CEO/Artistic Director, Jaimie Cordero (seen above. Don’t you LOVE her hair?). After the demo, I purchased a few colors and have been wearing them ever since. This makeup is versatile, fun to use, and stays on for a long time. I love it! Be on the lookout for a full post on Espionage in the future.
Do you stock up on Geek Fashion/Beauty products at cons? What’s your favorite purchase?
One of my favorite booths to visit at ECCC is TopatoCo. They have all of my favorite web comics and items to purchase all in one spot! This year I found some incredible aprons. At $18 each, you can’t go wrong!
These aprons and more can be found at TopatoCo.com.
The Geeky Hostess is gonna help you get your manners on! Each Monday, we’ll focus on a topic of etiquette. We’ll take a look at the classic rules (using Emily Post as a guide), and then evaluate the rules for our daily lives, creating a guide to “Geek Etiquette.” Have an etiquette question or topic suggestion? Email tara@geekyhostess.com!
At Emerald City Comicon, I asked my favorite web comic artists to share an etiquette tip. The results were… well… just watch:
You’re welcome/I’m sorry.
Marc Jacobs made one of our childhood dreams come true: He created a pair of shoes reminiscent of Cinderella’s glass slippers.
My only fear is that these would look like jellies when on. And/or that it would show your feet all scrunched up at the front, which would be less than appealing.
Still, these would be pretty awesome under a wedding dress for those who have always wanted to feel like a princess.
Transparent Pump, $595 at La Garconne.
Starting today, I will be picking up comics, seeing stars of my fave geeky shows, and taking photos of adorable cosplayers. That’s right, I’ll be at Emerald City Comicon.
If you want to come up and say hi, or are looking for something cool to do at ECCC, this is my schedule:
Friday
3pm: Women in Webseries
Although the female producers of Job Hunters will not be on this panel, we’ll still be in attendance to show our spirit of other local women in webseries.
The rest of my time on Friday will be spent exploring the main floor and chatting up artists and vendors on things like cupcakes and their favorite parties!
Saturday
3pm: Futurama: The Future Sounds Good
My friend and fellow Job Hunters producer Forest Gibson will be moderating a panel featuring the voice talent of Futurama. Can’t wait!
4pm: Zombie Orpheus Entertainment’s Webseries Premierathon!
I’ll be checking out other local webseries at this panel.
6pm: Womanthology
This women-made comic anthology has been making a buzz around the comic/Kickstarter scenes. Can’t wait to see what it’s all about!
10:30pm: Nerdprov
I’ll be watching an amazing team of improvisers go nerdy for the night at the Market Theater.
Sunday
2pm: JOB HUNTERS WORLD PREMIERE!
Can you tell I’m excited? We’ll be premiering the first episode of Job Hunters and doing a Q&A with the producers. Many of the cast and crew will also be in attendance, so we may pull some of them up for the Q&A as well.
After the premiere, folks can meet us at the Night Zero booth to chat more and take pics. We’ll even have some of our jumpsuits available for folks to try on.
Are you going to ECCC? Check out their full programming list here. What are you most excited for?
People thought they were crazy when they came out with a bacon syrup, but this new flavor from Torani may take the cake.
Bacon I could understand. But Chicken n’ Waffles? What can you use this for?
Torani suggests you make the following drink:
“Harlem Jazz Smash”
INGREDIENTS
¼ oz. Torani Chicken n’ Waffles Syrup
1 barspoon honey
2 peach wedges
1 ½ oz. Jack Daniels
2 dashes peach bitters
INSTRUCTIONS
Muddle peach wedges in Torani and honey. Add bitters and Jack Daniels, fill with ice. Stir well and garnish with a butter waffle cookie balanced on the rim.
Ok, I guess that does sound kind of good. Would you purchase Chicken n’ Waffles syrup? What would you make with it?
The syrup will be available starting in April, unless it’s revealed to be a long April Fool’s Day joke.
EDIT: As I joked above, it looks like this product was in fact an April Fool’s Day joke that started too early. Never fear, their bacon syrup is still real.
Despite my best efforts, my body has chosen to get sick on the eve of two weeks of conventions. I’m resting up and drinking tons of liquids, but I know I would be getting better more quickly if I had these Sherlock-inspired teas.
Made by adagio teas and blended by Cara McGee, each tea captures the personality of a different character from the BBC show. As the site says, “Whether your favorite character is Mycroft (cake!), Sherlock (smoke and mystery) or Moriarty (a bit insane and guaranteed to burn the heart of you if you’re not careful), you’ll hopefully find a blend to suit your taste.”
Teas, $10 for a 3 oz pouch at adagio.com.
This week, Woot.com launched “Looks Good on Paper,” a temporary shop featuring some popular shirt.woot designs on posters and cards. Because, let’s face it, sometimes the design is amazing, but it’s just not something I’d want to wear on a shirt. I’m a fan of the Cupcakeosaur and Hang In There card sets myself, both $6 for a pack of 10.
“Looks Good on Paper” will supposedly only run until April 1st, but I’m guessing enough attention/sales will keep it around longer.
My friend Margaret (of Nimble Narwhal Creations) has been keeping me up to date on wedding trends as she plans for hers. I asked her to do a guest post on a trend we’ve both been observing lately: themes that perhaps shouldn’t be tied in with a wedding.
One of the nice perks about planning your own wedding for blog nerds like me is filling up your feed with tons of ideas. Inspiration shoots often choose a movie as their theme, and often times it’s really cool to see what they come up with. Recently, I’m sure due to the popularity of the books and upcoming movie release, there have been several shoots done using The Hunger Games. Now, this seems like an awfully odd choice to me. Maybe it’s just my personal taste, but I don’t plan on incorporating things into our wedding that remind me of children killing each other, the harsh realities of poverty and the scary warning of what our reality-tv obsessed society could become.
A recent wedding blog post “wanted to channel their enthusiasm for the movie into a wedding shoot that would inspire brides who want a gloomy, yet pretty edge to their wedding.” I’m sorry but who are these brides? If you’re planning on bringing some gloom to your wedding…might I suggest some premarital counseling? I’m pretty sure my guests want a good meal, not bloodsports.
But hey, maybe there are some of you out there saying no way, this theme is awesome. So I’ve come up with some truly inspired Hunger Games elements to incorporate into your special day.
What do you think? Would you incorporate elements of The Hunger Games into your wedding? What’s the weirdest wedding theme you’ve heard of?
