Kryptonite Candy

The other day I was searching for “glow in the dark candy” (why? What do you do in your free time?), and was pleasantly surprised to see that it existed. This Instructables by BrittLiv will have you making yummy and toxic-looking candy in no time. The glowing effect comes from vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) , which means you could potentially say this candy is actually good for you! BrittLiv adds mint oil to hers, but says you can add any flavor you like to the candy–I’d recommend lime.

Geek Girl Con Wrap-Up

(Photo from EMP Museum’s Flickr stream.)

I had an absolutely fabulous time at the first Geek Girl Con. I bought stuff from the vendor room, painted miniatures, attended the Offbeat Empire party, met fellow lady-geeks, and attended some really great panels. One of my favorite panels was Killing Cattiness and Creating Community. They discussed a variety of causes of cattiness, but I was encouraged by their steps to deter it. Us current geek girls must think of ourselves as the “Elders of the Internet”; we should be available to encourage and teach the new geeklings instead of feeling competitive or protective of our hobbies. We should foster positive treatment by putting out positive vibes and celebrating each other. I’m a huge believer in positivity on the internet, and would love to see more. I encourage all of you to email, tweet, or Facebook a Geek Girl you admire and let them know why. Let’s show the internet that we can come together as a community and celebrate each other for who we are and what makes us special! Geek Girl Con would want it.

Geek Girl Con!

I’ll be at Geek Girl Con this weekend, and hope to see some of you there! With panels ranging from Star Wars to Burlesque to feminism, there’s pretty much something for everyone.

Tickets will be available at the door for $30 each day or $45 for a weekend pass, cash only.

If you’re in the Seattle area and want to geek it up a bit this weekend, check it out! Otherwise, stop by the blog next week for some updates on some of my favorite folks and vendors.

Find more info at their website or follow along on Twitter with hashtag #GeekGirlCon. I’ll be tweeting from my twitter handle (@GeekyHostess) as well.

Make Food From Your Favorite Video Game

Gourmet Gaming is blog out of the UK that shows you how to make real-life replicas of food you see in video games. It updates every Wednesday. Even if you don’t know how to cook with grams, the pics should provide enough inspiration to get you experimenting on your own!

(And in case you were wondering like I was: Yes, she has a recipe for the Portal Cake.)

RIP Steve Jobs

Whether you’re an Apple lover or not, you have to admit Steve Jobs is a true innovator. His contributions have changed how technology is perceived and used by so many, so it’s only fair that we celebrate the man after he is gone.

Tonight: make an apple pie, have a Washington Apple, and use your iPhone to call someone you love.

Magnetic Nail Polish

When InStyle Magazine and Geekologie both talk about the same thing, you know it’s prime material for The Geeky Hostess. So I present to you:

Magnetic Nail Polish.

The polish is created by London line “nails inc.” and is available in the states through Sephora. You can purchase their chrome and purple colors for $16 each. Nail polish with magnets? I’m sold.

Bacon Bracelet

Part of me thinks this is absolutely disgusting, and the other part of me thinks this is fabulous. Would you wear it? (And no, it’s not real bacon, in case you were wondering.)

Contest: Gamer Wine!

Looking for the perfect wine for your upcoming LAN party? Check out Gamer Wine. The Seattle-based company currently has three wines available:

n00b, a Merlot
Gamer Widow, a Pinot Grigio
and Stunlock, a red blend.

I had the pleasure of trying the wines the other day and they are fantastic. The labels are funny and approachable, but the folks behind the business know the wine industry and created some really great wine. My favorite was the Gamer Widow, an extremely crisp and tart Pinot Grigio that will be perfect next time Mr. Geek abandons me for a weekend-long session of Magicka.

Both of the reds are very smooth, drinkable, and approachable enough for wine lovers and wine noobs alike. I’m excited to bring a bottle of this wine to friends’ houses for upcoming events, and I’ll be sure to have a few bottles on hand for last minute holiday gifts.

Gamer Wine is currently available on their site for 10% off, and I’m giving a bottle away to one lucky commenter! Leave a comment with the name of the wine you most want to try by Thursday, October 6th, and one of you will get a bottle delivered to your door (provided you live in a state that allows wine delivery and are 21+).

Gamer Wine: $13.49-$15.29 at GamerWine.com.

EDIT: Our winner is ASHLEE! Ashlee, keep an eye out for an email with details!

HTML For Babies

It’s never to early to make sure your child is learning the important things. As someone who uses HTML daily, I would have loved to have started my education at a younger age.

This book is volume one in the three-part “Web Design for Babies” series. Keep an eye out for all of them!

Lego Jewelry

I know I’ve been posting a lot of stuff from Fab.com lately, but I can’t help it. This jewelry is just too cool. The two-finger rings and stud earrings are “built to scale”, meaning you can build on them with standard legos. AMAZING. I can picture creating a pretty blinging cocktail ring with a couple extra bricks.

Lego Jewelry, $9-$15 at Fab.com.
