Feel Better With A Good Book

Some days, you just need to run home after work, grab a giant bowl of ice cream (with hot fudge and sprinkles, please) and open up a fun book. And today, I did just that. I’m starting Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a book I recommended to my mom and she passed back on to me when she finished. The book is full of old (and kind of creepy) pictures of peculiar children, with complementing stories to go with. I’m only a couple chapters in, but the book is starting out similar to Briar Rose, one of my favorite Jane Yolen books. If you’re looking for something fun and fairly quick to read, I’d recommend it so far!

What’s your favorite book to turn to when you’ve had a bad day and need to escape?

How To Geek Out at BlogHer

This past weekend, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend BlogHer. Now, the idea of spending a weekend with 3500+ women bloggers seemed a bit daunting, but I’m so happy I went. I have never been surrounded by so many intelligent, interesting, passionate, and welcoming women in my life–I learned a lot and made some great connections. But enough about that, let’s get to a few quick recaps!

My roommate, Hilary, has the sweetest blog and cutest kid you’ll ever see. She and I got along fabulously, and she introduced me to the world of the mommy blogger. There are some incredible moms out there!

Favorite party? Sparklecorn. As in a dance party named after a sparkly unicorn. The cake was created by Charm City Cakes, and was THE COOLEST unicorn cake in the world.

We mingled, ate the cake, and danced the night away with cardboard cutouts of the Harry Potter kids and Darth Vader. When the party ended, the young wizards needed a place to sleep. I was generous enough to let them share my bed.

And one more geeky and embarrassing thing for you. My fantastic performance as Wolverine, courtesy of Fox:

Thanks to BlogHer, I have some fun new things to share with you, AND some awesome giveaways! Be on the lookout for the first next week.

Trendy Temporary Tats

Gone are the days of the butterfly and dragon tattoos. A group of designers that wanted something a bit more contemporary have teamed up to create Tattly, and they’ve been selling out quickly ever since.

Fab.com, a new discount design site, is offering some sampler packs of these tattoos for cheaper than you’ll find them anywhere else. Grab ’em quick! (I’m partial to the kitchen tools, robot, and watch set myself.)

Never has a tramp stamp looked so good.

Geek Etiquette, Weddings

Gollum Makes a Pesky Ring Bearer

This is one of the most hilarious and wonderful things I’ve ever seen.

1. Four Weddings is an awful, horrible, no good show. It pits 4 brides against each other to see who has the “best” wedding. Which means each bride will have three girls at her wedding with the sole purpose of judging her, comparing her wedding to their own. Ridiculous. (And yes, I’ve watched it. I love a good train wreck. Don’t get me started on my favorite show, “Toddlers and Tiaras”.)

2. Gollum gave up that ring a lot quicker than I thought he would.

3. Seriously. This is the best, most creative thing I’ve seen. But are your in-laws not loving the idea of a nearly-naked man throwing a fit in the middle of your wedding? Find other ways to incorporate the idea into your ceremony. Perhaps have a ring pillow with “My Precious” stitched into it. Get creative!

Beautiful DnD Song

Let’s get the week started with this beautifully mellow song about Dungeons and Dragons.

I’m thrilled to find a song that’s about Dungeons and Dragons, but doesn’t try to make fun of it. I like my humor, but this is such a refreshing change. Plus, I’m absolutely in love with the singer’s voice.

Wait for it…

(Don’t look away.)

I love the idea of a surprise flap. The snaps are a great touch.

No pattern yet, but you can read more details on the embroidery on Craftster.

Kid’s Book with Heat Sensitive Ink

Keep Our Secrets, a book coming out by McSweeney’s in November, has heat-sensitive, color-changing ink on every page. The book shows a boy and girl walking through a house, finding weird surprises at every turn.

Take a look at a demo below:

And if you haven’t yet read it, take a look at this great article on how to talk to little girls. Perhaps next time you’re looking for a gift for a little girl, you’ll pick up something interesting like this book instead of a cute outfit. Start that love of reading early!

(Keep Our Secrets is available for pre-order for $10.17 at Amazon.com.)

Calvin and Hobbes Playroom

This guy wins “Dad of the Year” for this amazing painting of Calvin and Hobbes for his son’s playroom.

What a great way to encourage a sense of imagination and adventure in your child! And props for the artistry. I can’t even stay in the lines when painting my nails, so I’m a bit jealous.

Cute Death Star Dress

Jennifer Landa rocked this Death Star dress at San Diego Comic Con, and has recently shared her secrets of making it with the Official Star Wars blog.

The gist? It’ll take a beach ball, a lot of paper mache and foam, and a bit of fabric paint. Read all about it here.

Marvel Collection by Williams-Sonoma

I was walking by Williams-Sonoma this weekend when something caught my eye, and I stopped to stare at the window like a kid longing for the toy bike in the holiday display. Marvel comics had teamed up with Williams-Sonoma. Superhero cupcake wrappers? Spiderman Comic Book cookies? Superhero cakes and cookies? Yes. Yes please.

My husband wouldn’t let me buy everything they had in stock (go figure), so I had to settle for the cupcake decorating kit. But I wouldn’t be surprised if I “accidentally” pick up the Comic Book cookie makers sometime soon.

Marvel Collection: $12.95-$39.95 at Williams-Sonoma
